mh (+), media, trivial, smeg

I found my hidden trove of Red Dwarf S1-8, so... yeah, I'm doing pretty good.

re: mh (+), media, trivial, smeg

I hadn't realized how much I missed this show. It's hacky and tropey and broad, but I love it, maybe BECAUSE of those traits.

Half the fun is picking out all the unexamined assumptions and having a good think over them. Like, I love all the episodes with "pure good," "pure evil," "superior" or "perfect" beings--which seem to be a major recurring theme--and picking apart stuff like "Why does being 'good' mean being non-violent to the point of being completely ineffectual?" :) (e.g. "Angels and Demons")

And I've always had a soft spot for how completely disinterested RD is in continuity. It's virtually nitpick-proof, not that this has stopped the True Fans from trying, because it just DOES NOT CARE. The sci-fi is all joke-driven. the technobabble is all contextual and subject to retcon at any moment, and I actually like it better that way.

And I'll always love the show for having the gall to retcon and ENTIRE SEASON FINALE with a screen crawl. That's a devotion to "let's get the fuck on with it" that... well, I'd love to see Westworld do it. :p

re: mh (+), media, trivial, smeg, possibly Red Dwarf spoilers downthread

Ahh, the "Dimension Jump" (Ace Rimmer) episode.

I'm not going to discuss the spoiler in detail (feel free to do so in replies, I'd LOVE to talk about it) but this episode has what might be my single favorite plot twist in all media. I love what it says about the influences that make a person "good" or "bad." (There's that dualistic morality theme again...)

@zebratron2084

those are good stuff

@zebratron2084

if you haven't negated the premis in the first 10 seconds, are you really trying?

re: mh (+), media, trivial, smeg

@zebratron2084 My last year in Singapore they were showing the series almost daily on BBC Prime and, boy, was that the right moment for me to watch the whole series, as it existed then. Not sure if it'd be wise to revisit.

Also that's when I saw 'My Hero' (superheros couples sitcom) which was dumb but fun but cratered horribly when Ardal 'Father Dougal' O'Hanlon left.

@zebratron2084

I hated TNG, DS9, Voyager, etc. and I still do. De-gustibus discourse is to not speak ill of those shows, where the characters are good, what they do is good, and everything in the universe will turn out correctly if one is passive, if one does what they are told, and if one surrenders all sense of self to whatever winds of plot that the producers put up this week.
I would rather watch Red Dwarf. Lore is the enemy of the good.

@xinjinmeng Oh, Trek was never sacred in my households, especially during my really transhumanist phase. Trek was always the exemplar of "humanist as opposed to something better." So many times they were on the verge of doing something truly transcendent, only to turn back with the rationalist equivalent of "Well, if we were really meant to fly, God would've given us wings."
