meanwhile, in today's ongoing MTG kerfuffle: putting this whole Lutri, the Spellchaser thing into context, the last time a card was -preemptively- banned out of a Standard-legal format, for any reason, was Memory Jar all the way back in 1999.

havin' a completely normal one :)

@hystericempress I can't make heads or tails out of what's going on with the "Companion" part of that card, nor the exact reasons this is so broken, and you know... I'm good, sis.

@hystericempress Actually, let me redact that. Now that I've seen the exact logic behind it -- preventing a "must have" card from coming into existence, and banning early to save people from busting their asses to acquire one -- the mental image of the MTG multiverse being overrun by goddamn otters made the whole bout of confusion TOTALLY worthwhile. :D

Freakin' otters. :>

@zebratron2084 Yeah, the real thing that makes me headdesk is the fact that this whole thing would have been solvable without bannings if they just went "Companions have to go in the sideboard like any other cards you get with a 'wish'-style tutor effect," which neatly gets around the inherent problems in formats like Commander and Brawl that don't have sideboards. This was an EMINENTLY avoidable problem if anybody had been clearer than mud about it.
