okay but actually: the reason I tend to have a lot of antipathy towards modern Dr. Who despite quite liking some of the older bits is its tendency to position the Doctor as the Best Most Importantest as opposed to simply a person who is, sometimes, in the right place at the right time. even back in the Tom Baker era, sure, the Doctor was defined by being egocentric, but they didn't walk around loudly crowing about how cool and scary and important they were.
