film review: "Nobody" (minor spoilers)
This is that Bob Odenkirk action thriller. It's very similar to John Wick. It left me feeling very indulged yet very hollow.
As noted over on Birdsite, you could have easily replaced every female bystander and every non-gun-wielding family member with a cardboard standee and it wouldn't have made much difference.
I started losing patience about a half-hour in with how unrealistic everybody's reactions felt to this armed maniac running around, especially his wife just... kinda rolling with the fact her husband essentially brought the Russian Mob down on her and her kids because he was having a goddamn midlife crisis.
The bus incident pissed me off, too. I wanted both the driver and the "young damsel in distress" (sigh) to tell him, "Wow, mister! You just made that situation a LOT MORE DANGEROUS. I was just gonna get off the bus in a populated area, but thanks for starting a knife-flashing death battle six inches from me. Good thing it never dawned on them to take me as a hostage!"
But, I mean, it's a fantasy. I just... I enjoyed it in a shameful greasy way, I guess. And at least we know from the first five minutes that the kitten in the film comes through just fine, even gets a little tuna snack. :)
But it's not a fantasy predicated on things I like or respect very much, and I spent the whole film feeling like I was expected to.
