studies I'm finding about trans people

Is HRT safe for trans women and trans men? This huge review of several decades of medical literature answers: Yes, it is very safe.

This is a link to the full text of the article. I recommend reading it so you are prepared to respond to concerns about risks that are nothing more than common misconceptions. For example, I often see people claiming that T causes uterine cancer, and there is no evidence for that.

@frameacloud This is actually a huge relief because I still had a not-really-informed half-notion in my head that, say, Peg was gonna have a short lifespan... purely because of something a trans friend blurted about HRT wrecking people's livers. I never followed up on it or really questioned it, just assumed it was one of the "deal with it when we come to it" sort of things...

@zebratron2084 @frameacloud Methyltestosterone, the only oral format of testosterone, can absolutely damage your liver. Basically nobody uses it any more, for just that reason.

It exists because the normal route from gut to bloodstream passes directly through the liver (via the portal vein), and it’s quite efficient at metabolizing dietary testosterone into estrogen. If you stick a methyl group onto it in the right place, the liver will wrestle that off instead. IIRC the metabolic by-product is pretty toxic, so it had to be dosed and monitored carefully.

Injectable and topical testosterone formats are vastly preferred.

@Verdigris @zebratron2084

Thanks for the info. It's cool that we have such safe options for HRT now.

Oh wow! That makes me so glad that I'm sharing about these.
