music, mood, feels, blood diamonds, racism, sincere phonies

My day had been emotionally complicated enough without getting Moon River-bombed by a Tiffany's jewelry ad. Of all the damn people who don't have the right to make me cry.

I have no resistance to that song. None. At least it wasn't the Kid Koala version. I would not even be able to type yet by now. You would have had to talk amongst yourselves. Because of the verklempt.

It's a pity the film it's from has fifteen minutes of VIRULENT YELLOWFACE RACISM in it, like the proverbial teaspoon of sewage in a barrel of champagne.

@fineursine I faintly remember reading that basically EVERYBODY advised Blake Edwards it was not a good idea. Or something similar that indicated NOPE, YUP, it was definitely seen as offensive then too. Nothing can justify it, not even values drift. D: The only consolation is that pretty much everybody involved deeply regretted it.

@fineursine Looked it up on wiki. The really interesting thing is even THEN, the producer Richard Shepherd pushed for proper representation! They KNEW that was a net social good and basic damn respect! But yup, Blake Edwards just liked Mickey Rooney's performance too much and insisted.

@fineursine He did apparently say he "wouldn't have done it" if he'd known it was offensive, but the full quote... well, just sounds like your classic Hollywood "sorry you chose to be offended, can we not all be reasonable together?" non-apology.
