re: mh (--)
@xinjinmeng Also as a completely and utterly separate matter from your kind reply...
Christ, I just hate everything about Warhammer 40K. :D It works as a joke, but JFC if I wanted it that grimdark I can just throw an ant farm into a barrel of flaming oil. :p
re: mh (--)
@xinjinmeng Although given how badly far LESS fascist societies tend to fail in reality... I now have this bizarre urge to run a Dr. Strangelove tabletop retelling in that world. With that "might makes right" attitude, there is NO FUCKING WAY that a society that bad at empathy and communalism can NOT walk itself straight into absurd self-destruction General Ripper style.
I JUST HATE THEM ALL SO MUCH</madeline_kahn>
re: mh (--)
@001zlnv @xinjinmeng I don't know what that means! 🎵</homestar_runner>
re: mh (--)
@001zlnv @xinjinmeng Oh, damn, maybe GW does recognize how goddamn silly the whole thing is. XD
(I have gotten several glimpses of WH40K lore that reassures me this is true and everybody knows how over the top it all is. Still, it just... gives my inner hippie the jibbies. :) )
re: mh (--)
they have at various times in their history.
original version 40k was full on parody. 2nd ed was black comedy, 3rd ed tipped over into grimdark played straight, 4th - 9th are unintentional self parody.
the rpgs are a mixed bag.
"dark heresy" is playing the grim dark straight. stuff is terrible and by great sacrifice you forestall the apocalypse by days.
continued...
re: mh (--)
"rogue trader" is society is a mess, but what do you care you're a space privateer who has exemptions from the majority of the rules. the game's mechanics encourages greed above all, and gives you the power to ruin planets.
"deathwatch" is crap.
"only war" is black comedy
"black crusade" is play a saturday morning cartoon bad guy out to destroy the universe. Or make your own private demon world, what ever.
the other 40k rpgs are not worth mentioning.
re: mh (--)
@zebratron2084 It should be noted that everyone involved in MAKING it knows how silly it is... those playing it, however...
re: mh (--)
@zebratron2084 @xinjinmeng
40k tabletop rpg that is now out of print. you play a platoon of guys all trapped in an entirely pointless fight. the platoon functions like clones in paranoia. you die then immediately switch to playing next guy in line. so "slim pickens rides the bomb to hell" is kind of a thing that happens frequently in it.
