philosophy, what is this called? 

I think that people have been philosophizing for long enough that any idea probably has a name, and I don't know it because I haven't studied philosophy.

It seems to me that there is no purpose to the universe or naturally to anything in it, only what it makes for itself or what something makes for it.

Some folks think that the purpose is made by god or something, or god's god, etc... There's always a purposeless god on top.

What's this idea called?

@relee You might want to do a Wikipedia dive on "naturalism," specifically in a literary context. If they're talking about Mark Twain and Stephen Crane, you're in the right place.
