why's it called grilled cheese, anyway? if you cooked it on a grill it would go all horrible and burned pretty much instantly

@trwnh Yes, but putting it on a grill wouldn't turn out very well I don't think

You make it in a skillet

@trwnh interesting. like a proper charcoal-fired grill? that's always been something for rare special occasions for us

@trwnh in at least my dialect of english, grill refers specifically to this thing:

@Felthry @trwnh

grill refers to several things. Yeah, especially in the US south it's *mostly* outdoor or barbeque grills, but it also refers to flattop grills, and a food that is grill*ed* can be either cooked on a bbq grill or a flattop grill or griddle

@Felthry @trwnh

grilling in general all shares that it's direct heat cooking it, but both "it's on a grille over coals/wood" and "it's been cooked directly on a hot metal surface" count.

Ever been in a wafflehouse? most of their cooking is a flattop grill.

then there's the connection to hibachi b/c those restaurants at least here in the us that are called hibachi grills b/c they use giant flattop grills...

@nautilee @trwnh fascinating sorts of weird!

it's a very uniquely strange feeling to learn that another dialect has a broader, more specific, or just different meaning of a word you use

@Felthry

also you are now responsible for me wanting to make grilled cheese.

gonna have roommate run to store and get some provolone and sharp cheddar so I can make some
