@trwnh not owning a skillet sounds like a completely outlandish concept but I guess just different food styles need different cookware
@trwnh skillets are very commonly used for eggs and onions, as well as pan-frying things (which is presumably also commonly done in pans... Honestly not sure where the dividing line is between pan and skillet) and making quesadillas, grilled cheese, cooking ground beef (in the crumbled form that's used in tex-mex cuisine)
@trwnh I'm starting to think that different dialects have other meanings of the term
grilling in general all shares that it's direct heat cooking it, but both "it's on a grille over coals/wood" and "it's been cooked directly on a hot metal surface" count.
Ever been in a wafflehouse? most of their cooking is a flattop grill.
then there's the connection to hibachi b/c those restaurants at least here in the us that are called hibachi grills b/c they use giant flattop grills...

@Felthry @trwnh you can grill bread on a grille-grill if you know what you're doing, I don't know how well that would extend to sandwiches since the advice is to use big thick slices & grill both sides ( found: https://www.thespruceeats.com/how-to-grill-bread-2217288 )
that said I make all my grilled cheese & quesadillas on an countertop panini press electric grill (it puts the ridges in!)
