tales of vesperia

today we learned: it's possible to get a surprise encounter *and* an advantage encounter at the same time

by shooting an enemy with the sorcerer's ring the moment that you enter a cutscene area, while said enemy is near enough to the spot you spawn after the cutscene to trigger an encounter, on the rear of where you spawn, and get lucky that you get the dizzy effect instead of the angry or stunned effect

how the fuck did all that line up perfectly without even trying

re: tales of vesperia

@Felthry so do you start off both facing away from each other in that case?

re: tales of vesperia

@Lioness it doesn't matter which direction the enemy is facing, just you

you get an advantage encounter by hitting an enemy on the field map with the sorcerer's ring, which does one of three things, chosen i think at random:

- anger the enemy, which turns them red and makes them chase you down ever outside the area they normally would
- stun the enemy, which turns them blue and makes them stop moving and also renders them impossible to enter an encounter with for a few seconds
- daze the enemy, which turns them white and makes them stop moving, and if you encounter them in this state you get an advantage encounter, where all enemies start out dazed

@Lioness surprise encounters are just when an enemy hits you from behind. they make you fight with a random party instead of your chosen one

not the usual back attack mechanic, but certainly an interesting one
