aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh

i do not know how to express the extreme frustration i am feeling about our internet
-F

why is it suddenly giving us 1-2 megabits

it was supposed to be *fixed* today and then that didn't happen and now it's broken worse for who knows why
-F

even stranger why is it still giving us 5 megabit upload speeds
-F

seriously if anyone can answer these questions *please do*

what can possibly cause download speeds to suddenly drop to a tiny fraction of their normal speed and even tinier fraction of what they're supposed to be, while keeping upload speeds the same
-F

@IceWolf no thank you i'm not up to dealing with strangers right now, i'm hoping holly or holly will be able to help because they know lots about computer stuff
-F

@Felthry @IceWolf @monorail are you seeing this drop in network speeds over both wifi and ethernet? or just on a particular device?
@Felthry @monorail @IceWolf do the cables look odd to you in any way (i.e. have any holes or possible shorts)? would you have spare cables you could attempt replacing them with?

@holly @monorail @IceWolf they do not look odd, no

and this was working yesterday, and none of the network hardware has been touched since, except to reboot both the router and the ONT after the problem started to see if that would fix it
-F

@Felthry i will admit i'm kinda grasping for straws here, but... have you tried seeing if you're having issues with packet loss? https://packetlosstest.com/

@holly what scripts do i need to allow for this site to work
-F

@holly oh, apparently it just flat doesn't work in waterfox for some reason

is there any way to test for packet loss with the ping utility or anything
-F

@Felthry @holly ......um, on Unix anyway. Dunno about Windows, but probably.

@Felthry that's weird, i'm using waterfox and got 100%

the ping tool could work, although you might want to use the /t flag to send more than just a few pings (you'd use Ctrl+Enter to display statistics, and the usual Ctrl+C to stop it)

@holly okay of the first ten pings to 9.9.9.9 four of them timed out, i think that might be a problem -F

@holly also are you using waterfox classic or waterfox current
-F

@holly waterfox classic doesn't support some of the super new html elements but it *does* support the old-style firefox extensions which is critical for usability for us
-F

@holly also also i'm trying to press ctrl-enter and it's doing nothing
-F

@Felthry then the windows website for the documentation for the ping tool lied to me then :/

@holly all i know is that i keep pressing ctrl-enter and it just keeps scrolling up the screen with more "reply from 9.9.9.9"s and "request timed out"s, completely ignoring my input
-F

@holly you didn't mean to press ctrl-enter before the program was running or anything did you?
-F

@holly oh hey when i cancel it with ctrl-c it gave me the statistics anyway
-F

@Felthry I’d try replacing the Ethernet cable from the router to the ONT box and see if that fixes anything

@holly but wouldn't 18% packet loss result in 18% slower internet, not 95% slower internet?
-F

@Felthry i wonder if there’d be any issues between the ONT and your ISP, but I feel like that becomes the responsibility of your ISP at that point especially if it involves anything like fiber optics
