every console that has a Fancy New Feature seems to go through an early phase where every game has obnoxious gimmicks that use that feature

the wii had it with everything using motion controls (almost always badly), the ds had it with everything using the touchscreen

i can't really think of any other super gimmicky things on consoles other than the psvita's rear touchpad thing and we don't knwo enough about the vita library to know how badly that was used

@Felthry The PSX comes to mind. It was great at 2D, but everyone was doing 3D whether it was appropriate or not.

@terrana @Felthry I mean that was partially Sony only wanting 3D games - I think there’s numerous articles about games like Symphony of the Night where there was a good chance it wouldn’t have got a PS1 release

@Dex @terrana I'm glad it did, though. It's quite hard to play Saturn games these days, and if it had been Saturn-exclusive I don't know how we would play it now.

Then again, if a game like SotN had been Saturn-exclusive, maybe Sega would still be making video game consoles.

@Felthry @Dex I'm not sure one good exclusive would have been enough to save Sega from their infighting and consequent lack of clear direction.
