every console that has a Fancy New Feature seems to go through an early phase where every game has obnoxious gimmicks that use that feature
the wii had it with everything using motion controls (almost always badly), the ds had it with everything using the touchscreen
i can't really think of any other super gimmicky things on consoles other than the psvita's rear touchpad thing and we don't knwo enough about the vita library to know how badly that was used

@Zest oh yeah the wii u
great emulation machine. had like two good games on it
-F
the rear touchpad was useful for rhythm games iirc?
@Patashu all i know is that when we learned about it all we could think was "what even is the point of having this"

@Felthry The PSX comes to mind. It was great at 2D, but everyone was doing 3D whether it was appropriate or not.
@Felthry Console gimmicks have been around forever. We just have either normalized them or don't think of them that way.
For instance, how many SNES games use painfully aggressive or poorly thought out mode 7 effects? It was the Cool New Thing nobody knew how to use well so you got a lot of ridiculous usages.
@Facet that's true! I guess I was thinking more of control gimmicks, since I was thinking specifically about how awful that whole magic seal thing was in dawn of sorrow

@Felthry
for the wii U this lasted the entire console's lifetime :')
