this usb c to a adapter we just went out to get says "designed for mac, ipad, and other usb-c devices"

since when did ipads have usb on them? i thought apple hated usb

@Felthry To our knowledge while iphones tend to only have a lightning port these days, their tablets and laptops always have usb b/c the ability to use things like flash drives and keyboards is too useful for them to get away with allowing only proprietary ones.

@curls clocking is the term for the rotational alignment of connectors on a cable relative to each other, in this particular case it's like 60° which is a really weird number and not good -F

@curls it's almost always a multiple of 90° and for an adapter like this i would expect it to be 0° (or 180° which are equivalent in this case)

the fact that it's so misaligned is a sign of somewhat poor quality but it works so eh

@Felthry the only thing i have that is this short (ignoring the usb c to audio jack one, because one end is circular) is this usb a to sub c headphone charge cable but it's flat, and i think all my usb c cables are 0° too.

@curls yeah like i said you usually expect 0° unless there's some reason for it not to be, and when there is some reason for it not to be it's usually 90°, 180°, or 270°

i mean it doesn't really impact function or anything, it just looks kinda sloppy on a cable short enough for it to be noticeable

i expect that it wouldn't matter at all on cables more than a couple feet long, though

@Felthry I am trying to think how you'd even make something like this. I expect having the ends lie flat or held at 90° in a vice while you are getting the sleeving done, but I don't know much about how cables are made anyway.

@curls i don't know about USB cables specifically but the ones we'v emade it's just what orientation you hold the connector when you crimp it on
-F

@curls usb c is too small to have crimp contacts though so they'll be soldered, but i guess it's the same idea
-F

@Felthry i meant for mass produced cables, making it anything else but 0° seems like a hassle

@Felthry the "pro" styled ones all have USB-C, the M1 ones even have Thunderbolt
