@Leucrotta To be fair, "kinda good at everything" describes a lot of wild animalls that aren't super specialized to particular niches, humans included. But yeah, I see what you mean - I'd figure especially the folks who tamed the ancestors of modern day dogs probably *did* have a use for a companion that could do at least a little of everything, and modern dog breeds didn't really come about until the Chalcolithic or so at the earliest.
@Thaminga conventional wisdom holds that wolves are kinda generalists as far as body plan; not a great puller like a sled dog, a great ratter like a terrier, a great runner like a sight hound, etc, something only okay at all of it. But... they certainly look appealing, and you’d figure someone *would* want a domestic animal that was okay at everything.
