"if you're gonna pay $50 for a Fnirsi DSOTC3, you might as well save up for an Analog Discovery 3" "buy a Rigol 800 series" "8 channels or gtfo"

*looks at prices*

.....help chat, I need a wrench big enough for an entire industry :blobcatgooglyheadache:
it doesn't help that if you don't live in the US, Germany, China or Japan suddenly your options are 10x less and 2644626942469296429642x more expensive
so after wayyyyyyyy more research than anyone ever should do, I have reached a conclusion for the bare minimum oscilloscope one might need

virtually any analog signal, most digital signals (I2C, SPI, GPIO, serial, parallel, USB 1.1): 50MHz 2ch oscilloscope for 70€
USB2+, Ethernet, HDMI, DP, PCIe, most other fancy stuffs: 1GHz 4ch oscilloscope for 7000€

mr beast thumbnail moment

(specifically, I’ve chosen the Zoyi ZT-703S and the Rigol MHO5104 as each baseline)

you can also do 2.4GHz/5GHz wireless and such with a better oscilloscope, but at that point you’re dealing with Tektronix and Keysight and everything gives you a “quote” button… which is there just to let you know you’ll never be able to afford it :blobcatfluffowo:

also worth mentioning: I don’t get why most people online seem to be obsessed with bench oscilloscopes and quickly dismiss the handheld and USB ones as useless, so many comments going “I don’t want to carry a laptop around” :blobcatgooglyheadache: :blobcatgooglyheadache: :blobcatgooglyheadache: :blobcatgooglyheadache: :blobcatgooglyheadache: :blobcatgooglyheadache: :blobcatgooglyheadache: :blobcatgooglyheadache:

@xerz I'm confused, if I'm gonna be working on something I'm already gonna be carrying some sort of computer

@noiob EXACTLY like, what are you even doing???????????

Follow

@xerz I was thinking "would be nice to just use my ipad for that" and lo and behold there's an ipad oscilloscope but it's 400 dollars

@noiob the thing with DSOs for the iPad is that they’re the same as USB ones and they seem… unjustifiably expensive

@xerz iPads even have USB now but I guess it's the apple tax… but it'd be such a great fit, plenty of screen real estate, plenty of computing power, easy ways to store and share data, super portable
