@thingywott spotted hyenas aren’t native to Greece so leucrottoi are a Greek attempt to describe them, as badger-headed stag-lions with bone ridges instead of teeth, capable of imitating human speech. This shows up as more or less a D&D monster. Between hyena, D&D and nobody else having grabbed the name, I tend to use it.
“Laughing pup,” is just a friend’s name for me.
