turns out a lot of people in the rwandan genocide tried to appeal to being "good people" and victimization - "were targeted for being Hutus"

we've seen this behavior thoroughly documented in the alt right since a certain game dev was revenge targeted and it continues today

some self-thinking about my extremely heavy world shit post, talking about nazis

why am i reading this while on vacation?

well, i care a lot about figuring out how to take apart nazis and i think understanding how they justify themselves is an important step to deconstructing that if you deal with them

punching nazis is great but that alone isn't enough to de-radicalize every one of them

@vahnj I'm very much of the opinion that thinking you're absolutely and undeniably a good person is one of the most dangerous things for a person to believe about themself.

@starkatt i wholeheartedly agree

@vahnj have you seen The Act of Killing? it's a documentary about the people who participated in anticommunist death squads in indonesia in the 1960s. it's a tough watch but it gave me some perspective on how people manage to justify really monstrous things to themselves

@wolfteeth nope! Maybe I'll have to check it out
