art and "interesting times"; mandatory cut for huge :)
@mawr YES <3
I love Kurt Vonnegut, but his quote about art having all the political effect of "custard pie dropped from a stepladder" has always infuriated me... because HIS ART is half the fucking reason I put any effort into developing a leftist ethical system...
It also totally blows my mind when I look at political/satirical media from the 60s–80s and it's ALL THE SAME. It's so comforting to be reminded that they felt just the same way that we do, that the world is breaking and there are devils in charge, and that everything... kinda worked out okay and kinda didn't, and while the stakes may be higher today, otherwise it's all pretty much biz as usual.

@zebratron2084 @mawr I think it’s that guys like Vonnegut and Tom Lehrer don’t see “other people take comfort in this,” they’re too busy squirming with how it isn’t getting legislation in place or getting living OSHA hazards out of office.
Believe me if I could do more to fight this bullshit with drawing than entertain myself and hopefully others (which is still vital, mind), it’d be very appealing.

@zebratron2084
Besides, a well aimed custard pie dropped from a step ladder onto the right target can have a SIGNIFICANT political effect!
I've thought a lot about the parallels between today and the 60s. At least when history repeats itself, the good parts come with it. ♥️
