Emoji 20th anniversary, important thing to talk about but it's not pleasant.

As we approach emoji's 20th anniversary, it's super important to recognise that in a nutshell, #emoji (as presented to us by tech companies) so far has been:

- a form of language imperialism

- a corporate cooption of digital graphical language, a shit excuse to sell phones each year

- an attempt to standardise visual communication globally which is wrong on so many levels

- is incredibly normative

So hey, folks in the US, be careful what you eat right now, since our food isn't being inspected. We're already seeing an uptick of tests for salmonella and e.coli at the lab I work for.

“Men’s sexuality is allowed to be explicit with a literal sex robot in the shape of an unrealistically proportioned woman and VR porn in point of pride along the aisle. Female sexuality, on the other hand, is heavily muted if not outright banned.”

45: if you're the comedian at the table, you have a responsibility to not undercut the story being told at the table. rpgs are a game and everyone is there to have fun, but not everyone's fun is enhanced by a stream-of-consciousness sketch comedy.

found a legit incredible blog about obscure electronic games. beautifully observed write-ups of tons of games i've never encountered, such as this 1988 game by an afro-caribbean woman about subvertng and overthrowing a slave plantation:

Moving away from the platforms that have sucked us in and exploited us, at a scale big enough to send a clear, revolutionary message to capital, is going to take principles, not convenience; it's going to take us collectively deciding that no matter the convenience of corporate walled garden platforms, we need to stick to communications mediums that reflect the freedom we want that we do not have under capital.

Many options exist, but they are withering away, and inertia is hell to fight.

If you think about it, the Catholic Church were among the first engineers in the West:

* They mastered "embrace and extend" over every pantheon they encountered.

* They moved fast (for the day) and broke things.

* Their exorcisms require a senior admin and an intern.

* Their documentation hasn't been updated since v0.1a.

@noelle This happens a *lot* actually, and I mean a LOT.

Some Comanche want to be called Numunuu because Comanche comes from the Ute name for them (kimanci) meaning "enemy" or more literally "people who attack me all the time." The same thing happened with the word "apache."

In fact, here's a big-ass list. native-languages.org/original.

(Do note that sometimes the tribe themselves have adopted the new for themselves, as is the case with the Cherokees)
