Modern Operating systems

It's genuinely a mess out there.
So after seeing it mentioned a couple of times I decided to watch this video of Jacob Collier performing a choral piece and modulating to "G half-sharp major".
And okay so it turns out microtonal choral music is... "like nothing I've heard before" is an understatement. "Otherworldly" is also an understatement.

I cannot imagine this has gotten too popular but this idea kicks ass: a tiny little growroom literally at the grocery store that grows mushrooms for sale.

Ridiculous software bullshit (aka Telegram).
me: I'd like to share some line art as a nice, clean PNG that's only 40K.
Telegram: Ooh! I'll help out by resizing it badly and recompressing it as a JPEG over three times the size!
me: That's not— *sighs* Okay, fine, nevermind. I'll link them to the PNG hosted elsewhere instead.
Telegram: Ooh! I'll make sure when they click the link to download it they'll get a version that's resized badly and recompressed as a JPEG over three times the size!
me: Why would you—
Telegram: I'M HELPING SO MUCH
Genie: You have ONE WISH.
Me: Alright, I have one, but it's very detailed.
Genie: As long as it is only one wish, you're allowed to spend as much time as you want detailing it.
Me: Alright, here we go. *Grabs notebook and takes a deep breath* The key words MUST, MUST NOT, REQUIRED, SHALL, SHALL NOT, SHOULD, SHOULD NOT, RECOMMENDED, MAY, and OPTIONAL are to be interpreted as described in [RFC2119].
Genie: Wait, is that...?
Me: *Flips notebook* Chapter 1. Preamble.
Notepad++ fail and task derailment.
It's not uncommon that software updates break functionality that I've come to take for granted. This usually derails the crap out of whatever task I was trying to work on when I found the problem.
Sometimes, I can find a fix within a couple minutes and get back to doing the thing.
Sometimes... I spend hours digging through documentation and forum posts to no avail. The worst is when I find a couple posts asking about the problem, and the only responses are from folks who would rather criticize the post than actually, you know, help.
In this case, the trouble is this – https://superuser.com/questions/1432245/after-a-recent-update-to-notepad-7-6-6-i-cannot-enter-accented-characters-suc – and I'm almost ready to start installing previous versions of Notepad++ until my keyboard works right again. (And yes, it's the only soft I use that has this problem.)
Sesame Street, a show created for public access television to help kids from low-income families learn to read and write, is being put being a paywall which will prevent the kids who most need it from accessing it.
The past 50 seasons are also included in that so they can't be streamed anywhere else.
Fuck capitalism.
Pirate Sesame Street.
“I hate it when I’m chillin’ in my crib, having a bowl of soup, getting my snake on and then BOOM, a party of 4-6 player characters of levels 12-14 show up.”

cranky ex Bay Area comments
Then @ElectricKeet suggested that North Star Diner’s build your own breakfast burritos are in fact a little like Build A Bear Only Now With Bacon, in that they put the tortilla up to a nozzle and fill it.
Since I lived in the Bay for a while I suggested that if it potentially put ordinary people out of work a burrito stuffing machine was just bro-ey enough someone in Silicon Valley might make one.
slightly macabre
Discussion with @ElectricKeet went from Weekend at Bernie’s and how stabbing people in restaurants is okay whereas hauling a dead body in is an OSHA violation, thence to corpse cafes opening in Japan, where you have a selection of cadavers to sit with and you can tell them ANYTHING ‘cause they’re that accepting. “I love you, embalmed complete stranger!”
You know why all the old software people liked IRC?
Because when you wanted to ask a question in some channel you'd never been to before, you didn't have to spend 10 minutes going through forms to set up account usernames & passwords and unsubscribing from newsletters and alerts like you have to today with the damn web forum software you think is so great.
