it's amazing to me that, through liberal use of glitches, people have figured out how to 100% a game about jumping while only pressing the jump button 22 times in the entire game

and they can non-100% beat the game only pressing the jump button once

@Felthry any% is 0x now due to a bug in the Wii Virtual Console's emulation - but it's still an official Nintendo release, so it counts

@Dex I thought there were other A presses that couldn't be removed on VC?

@Felthry Correct. The spawning displacement glitch is only in the JP N64 version, which used to be the only way to enter the Secret Aquarium 0x, and re-entering Tick Tock Clock 0x by landing on the lip of the clock after some stars.

However, a method to get to the Secret Aquarium 0x on VC was found, and there's enough leeway with any% to completely skip Tick Tock Clock entirely (which you have to do since the first entry is 1x)

@Dex Oh, okay. I thought VC any% was still not 0x because of the secret aquarium thing.

@Felthry The Secret Aquarium would be skippable anyway if needed - the any% route gets 95 stars, and you only need 70 to beat the game.

@Felthry Actually, after checking, I got this the wrong way round:
The original method for accessing the Secret Aquarium was fine on VC, but would crash the N64 version because the N64 crashes if the camera travels to a parallel universe, and you can't lock the camera in one position while you're in the castle like you can in the levels.

However, then they found a way of getting to it without parallel universes so it's doable on both.
