serious question: why isnt cave story's experience system more common? its a REALLY elegant way to make enemies matter in a sorta metroid-y platformer game

@FragileVal could you remind us of just how that system works? we haven't played cave story in years and years

@Felthry Experience and levels are tied to the weapons you use instead of your character; each weapon can level up to three times after collecting the golden xp triangles enemies drop, and you lose experience for your equipped weapon when you take damage. It thus introduces both a new valuable pickup and a punishment for getting hurt beyond losing health. Now enemies have more value both as obstacles and as ways to gain power, without there being obligatory long grinding!
