video games, vent, -

Why does it seem like every video game these days is either a mobile game designed to get you addicted to it so you buy in-game currency, or a multiplayer-only FPS?

What happened to games with really good stories? Games that pull you in not for their cheap addictive tricks or their heavily skill-focused gameplay but for their immersive stories and intricate lore? or hell, even just games that are _fun to play_? they're all just either trying to get you to buy stuff, or being way too serious and brown. or both.

I want fewer games that inspire competition and more games that inspire wonder, creativity, games that explore interesting topics

@Felthry

in short? focus groups, out of touch marketing departments and ceos, and shareholders. It's not good enough to go after a decent amount of money in an established sector of the market, you have to be going after literally all the money in the largest section of the market you can find, and making more money every year than the last or you're a failure

@nautilee so, capitalism is ruining yet another thing

@Felthry

that's a good way to put it, yes.

this is also an industry that will say a game sold "below expectations" because it didn't outsell their previous highest lifetime record game's sales within a year

@Felthry I forget if you've played Subnautica?

re: video games, vent, -

@starkatt we kinda want to, someone we have steam sharing with has it

re: video games, vent, -

@Felthry It checks all three of those boxes.

re: video games, vent, -

@Felthry And is one of my favorite games really?
