after getting two answers I am now even more confused

@LexYeen@snouts.online could I ask for an answer on this from you? you're the one who I saw using the term and thus prompted this question so I'd kinda like to know what it means when you use it

@LexYeen@snouts.online sorry to put you on the spot like this, i'm just very confused

@nautilee really? I've seen plenty of people using it in what doesn't seem to be a slur sort of way...

@nautilee including at least one person I normally trust to be pretty knowledgeable about that kind of thing

@Felthry

...well, everywhere I've seen it used and in common parlance, it's a slur. and it originally started as shorthand for a slur phrase.

@nautilee ...I remember hearing that it was a reference to the egyptian god thoth

@Felthry

...what @queerzel said is right from everything I've ever seen, I just didn't wanna use that phrase. Basically it's shorthand for that phrase and other similar synomic slurs.

@nautilee @queerzel@snouts.online I've seen people use it in ways that make it seem like it just means "horny"

bad words

@Felthry "that hoe over there", it started as a slur for women posting pictures of themselves on Instagram and was both

reclaimed (?) by people who use it to describe themselves in a positive way (like someone would refer to themselves as a slut)

and became a thing in the term "begone thot" like a banishment? I'm not sure why people use it but it's not in a nice way, at best as a problematic meme

re: bad words

@noiob @Felthry I've been told there's also a racial angle to it - that it originated in AAVE (African-American Vernacular English) and has been appropriated from and disconnected from that context.

fuck if I know why so much of the internet decided they're comfortable with that.

re: bad words

@packbat @Felthry haven't heard of that but I'm not surprised
