today on felthry learns things it didn't know were different are different: apparently american pancakes are very different from british ones

food

@Felthry I just googled "british pancakes" and was like "yeah those are a bit thinner than what I know as a pancake", then I googled "german pancake" and uhhh, I've never seen one of those

re: food

@Felthry so are british pancakes really that thin? that's almost a crêpe! The kind of pancakes I know are probably twice as thick

@nautilee How hugely? because like I know there are a ton of styles of bread

food

@Felthry

apparently even the same style of bread will be made with much less sweetener over there

re: food

@nautilee ohhh well yeah that's just true of just about everything yeah

re: food

@nautilee the us puts too much sugar in pretty much literally everything

re: food

@Felthry

it's ruined my taste buds tbh I like sugar way too much

re: food

@nautilee suggestion: try getting some lower-sugar snacks like maria cookies or animal crackers

those maria cookies helped us learn to appreciate cookies that contain flavors other than just "too much sweet"

re: food

@Felthry

ok animal crackers are really good but I'm always tempted to just go for the pink iced ones tbh.

that said my gf and current roommate has been teaching me to like things different from my usual. Like, er, she's a massive fan of spicy stuff that I normally didn't like as much but am learning to love.

also, veggies on sandwiches.

re: food

@nautilee @Felthry veggies are good for you thoooooo

but yeah, eating sweet stuff at the normal american amount really kills your ability to appreciate more subtle flavors

@Felthry I think it's american pancakes are different from europe's in general?

Assuming you're talking about thick vs. thin.

@Felthry VERY.

And that doesn't even touch on the differences of buckwheat pancakes, potato pancakes, or corn cakes.

@JulieSqveakaroo and I suppose if you take "american" to include latin america to you can probably count arepas in the pancake category

mm, arepas.
