Best JRPG series?

What's the fediverse think?

Which have you played?

As a follow-up to the best jrpg series poll, i'm curious which ones of these people have actually played at least one game out of (not necessarily all the way through, but more than just trying it out for a few minutes):

re: Best JRPG series?

@Felthry brb increasing the poll limit so Drakengard can fit onto this list :P

re: Best JRPG series?

@noiob is drakengard that good? we've only barely heard of it, maybe should try it

re: Best JRPG series?

@Felthry I've only played NieR: Automata which I greatly enjoyed, and the beginning of NieR. Especially the older games have some serious problems (predominantly framerate and to a lesser extent, pacing) but yeah I'd totally recommend it. Yoko Taro's approach to game design is one I enjoy a lot, I'm just not an RPG person :D

re: Best JRPG series?

@noiob NieR is part of the drakengard series? i thought it was a completely separate thing

re: Best JRPG series?

@Felthry they technically exist in the same universe, but they're continuations of some joke ending

afaik the games are supposed to stand for themselves anyways

Best JRPG series?

@Felthry This is a tough one to answer, even though I said *a* Tales game was my favorite JRPG. The Tales series has really wildly varying quality... I feel like most of these others have a much higher baseline?

re: Best JRPG series?

@connie well, it's also about what "best series" means to you personally--it could be "best at being consistently good" or it could just be "contains the best game" or even "contains the game i'm personally most nostalgic for"

re: Which have you played?

@Felthry Part of why I haven't voted: I can only tick one box, so I really don't know enough about any of the others (or even Pokemon, the one I ticked) to actually compare them...

re: Which have you played?

@packbat you can only tick one box??? this is a multi-selectable poll though

or at least it's supposed to be, did something go wrong?

re: Which have you played?

@Felthry oh, no, everything's fine, I can tick as many as I want - but I've only played a game in one of the series...

(...I guess I played Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, but I don't know if that counts...)

re: Best JRPG series?

@Felthry oh my god, a poll that includes suikoden, thank you so much

re: Best JRPG series?

@babbage how could anyone NOT include suikoden in a poll like this though

re: Best JRPG series?

@Felthry because 99% percent of the people i've mentioned it to have never heard of it D:

I'm guilty of only owning V and a demo of IV but i read so much of the lore and i absolutely love it as a series

now i can finally say "georg's eyepatch of shame" and have at least one person get it (probably)

re: Best JRPG series?

@babbage we've only played 1 and 2 but we own both

suikoden 2 is probably the crown jewel of our video game collection, as well as probably the most expensive single non-essential thing we've ever bought with our own money and not felt guilty about

it's just That Good

re: Best JRPG series?

@babbage *we own all of them, not we own both

actually just picked up IV a little while ago at a local used game store that apparently had a windfall of good ps2 games, as they'd just gotten in multiple copies each of suikoden 3, wild arms 3, suikoden 4, and final fantasy X, among others

re: Best JRPG series?

@Felthry Oh nice! I've only recently gotten a PS2 hooked up again, and thus was actually able to play V on something other than an emulator, so I definitely need to grab some of the other games (including a full version of IV)

That said, II is definitely really expensive and I'm just.. hghgh. Most of the listings I've seen are more expensive than my laptop, though the used ones seem like I'd be able to get them (at some point)

I really, really look forward to seeing Viki's prior appearances too

re: Best JRPG series?

@babbage 1 through 3 are available on PSN too, we've heard

and yeah 2 is really expensive--we were lucky and got a complete copy in good condition for $150 but that was also a few years ago and the price doesn't tend to go down

re: Best JRPG series?

@babbage 1 and 2, being 2d games, also emulate well on potato hardware, if you just want to play them

re: Best JRPG series?

@Felthry There's some cheaper copies on ebay, usually for ~$80, but only one of them I've seen so far is a guaranteed buy. Most of the others are auctions.

Also, I kinda get annoyed when I have to emulate things, so I'm probably gonna opt for hard copies

Best JRPG series?

@Felthry I can vote on the other poll but I can't on this one because the mother series is my pick

re: Best JRPG series?

@Linda that's what the Other option is for!

re: Best JRPG series?

@Felthry ! I didn't even see that thank you
