tales of vesperia
today we learned: it's possible to get a surprise encounter *and* an advantage encounter at the same time
by shooting an enemy with the sorcerer's ring the moment that you enter a cutscene area, while said enemy is near enough to the spot you spawn after the cutscene to trigger an encounter, on the rear of where you spawn, and get lucky that you get the dizzy effect instead of the angry or stunned effect
how the fuck did all that line up perfectly without even trying
spoilers, reproducing the glitch re: tales of vesperia
for anyone interested in reproducing this not-exactly-glitch (which I would like to see since *dammit* I feel really bad about missing that screen recording): this was the knight at the top of the right-hand staircase in the room right past where you fight Yeager in Zaude. the cutscene that triggered was the one where Patty finds the Maris Stella
Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition spoilers
got it! took like twenty tries but eventually it worked
it's not really a glitch, since the game seems to handle it just fine--it's just weird and not something normally possible.
re: Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition spoilers
@Felthry Don't think I ever encountered this, interesting find!
@connie I can't imagine there's any actual use for it, though I did want to make some sort of record of it in case it's helpful for speedrunning or something somehow (I can't imagine how though)
I mostly find it interesting that the game handles that properly, and the "advantage encounter" and "surprise encounter" texts are actually shifted to not overlap or naything
@Felthry the text part is definitely the most surprising, it's such an edge case
@connie I wonder if maybe those messages use the same system as something else in the game that makes that happen
Maybe the level-up/new-skill post-battle notifications? for those it's normal to have multiple lines
re: Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition spoilers
@connie since I think you might find this mildly interesting
