does anyone ever just think about how horribly designed those 12 V car power sockets/plugs are?
@noiob I don't think they were, no
or rather, they were meant to be used just for heaters for the purpose of lighting cigarettes, which... almost no one uses anymore (the heaters that is, plenty of people still use cigarettes, though less than there used to be)
@Felthry I mean nowadays cars usually have USB ports for power anyways
@noiob ours has one of those, it's completely useless, think it's limited to 100mA
@Felthry USB 2 requires at least 500mA though?
@noiob no, USB 2.0 requires at least 100 mA, with a maximum of 500 mA
there's also the charger extension specification that allows for up to 2.1 A but not everything implements that
@Felthry well, a friend of mine recently got a new Kia Picanto which has a proper USB port for Android Auto that works pretty dang well
@noiob our car's not old but it's used, and the usb port may be damaged for all we know
@Felthry well there's always the good ol' lighter port lmao
@noiob yep!
@Felthry YEP.
@starkatt i mean yeah it's a side effect of them being designed for cigarette lighters instead of actually providing power to something useful but, we really should have switched to something else
even besides the obvious "it's a power plug that's big enough to stick even an adult's finger into, let alone a child's", it also is just a really really bad electrical contact
@Felthry they were never intended to be used as power plugs, were they?
