Anyone know anything about getting a PS3 to play video off an external hard drive? the drive is MBR with a single 256GB FAT32 partition on it (the drive itself is much larger but the rest of it is not being used right now), which is what the internet suggests should be all that's needed for a PS3 to recognise it, but it won't show up. It has a bunch of MP4s on it that were converted with handbrake specifically to be playstation compatible video files

Sure, we could play them off our computer hooked up to the tv but kinda want to be able to use a remote control? and the PS3 supports that kind of thing, at least when we used it in the past to play BDs and DVDs

actually if anyone knows a good way to use a remote (that could even be a wireless gamepad, even) with VLC, that would work too

Just want a way to easily skip past the opening theme song that's on each and every video, as well as play/pause and stuff

@Felthry I'm fairly sure Kodi supports the PS4 controller as a remote! Would that work?

@IceWolf We're not familiar with Kodi, but we don't have a PS4 controller anyway.

@Felthry It's basically Steam Big Picture for everything except games. :3

I'm pretty sure it supports other controllers too, probably including PS3; my brain just defaulted to PS4 because that's what I've got. *facepaws*

@IceWolf @Felthry It also has a smartphone remote control app (Kore) as well the ability to host a webserver that can host a smartphone remote control webapp.

@Genstar @IceWolf yeah looking into it this is the way to go i think, ps3 doesn't want to work and xbox 360 gets a little further but then shows the drive as unformatted

@Felthry Plex works on the PS3 so you could probably stream the files from your computer

@noiob What's plex? Is it something that can be used on an unmodded ps3? I don't know if the ps3 can even connect to wifi, we only have one ethernet jack

@Felthry the ps3 has wifi, and it's a video streaming server/client. It shows up as a video app on my ps3 so I assume it's just available on psn

@Felthry oh or you can just hover over the usb drive, press triangle and select "display all"

@noiob well the problem is I can't see the usb drive at all, it's not showing up under eany of the headers

@Felthry I put a random mp4 on a thumbdrive and it plays perfectly

@noiob @Felthry the PS3 has WiFi and supports UPnP, but it has quite restrictive music support. I used to just have an UPnP server that would transcode audio files to wav to play music on the TV's sound system, but I don't remember which server and if it could do that with videos

@noiob @Siphonay i'm not really sure how to use a media server in general, never had any cause to before

would prefer to just get this external usb hard drive to work

could the fact that it's usb 3.0 be a problem? usb 3 is supposed to be backwards compatible and the drive is externally powered though

@Felthry @Siphonay my money is on that the PS3 can't handle the size for some reason

DLNA/uPnP is natively supported on the PS3, my phone can open one and it just shows up, it's pretty handy

@Felthry @noiob well they're pretty simple to set up, servers usually have relatively friendly graphical interfaces and you don't need to do any networking stuff, just have both your devices on the same network and it'll show up on your PS3. No clue why your drive doesn't show up though

@Siphonay @noiob Looking to install a upnp server, do you know of any that are good, free, and can have a password on them? I don't want this to be open to just anyone in the apartment complex

@Felthry @Siphonay oh yeah upnp might not actually work in your weird network setup

@noiob @Felthry though yeah you should be able to make it read your transcoded mp4s without further conversion with UPnP and it also should support FAT32 volumes
