apparently whether you play it on a widescreen display or not actually materially affects the speedrun of super mario galaxy 120 star
because you need a lot of star bits for that speedrun and you can pick up star bits by pointing the wii remote at them, but that only works for ones that are on screen, and the game has a habit of having star bits spawn in around mario/luigi while in autoscrolling segments specifically to be picked up this way. some of them spawn offscreen at 4:3 resolutions
@Felthry I guess it makes sense that they just crop the 16:9 image for a 4:3 TV, if it doesn't really affect typical gameplay. Saves some dev time
@noiob oh yeah it makes total sense, just seems weird to me that it has an actual effect beyond just like, maybe you can't see some enemies off to the side for a little bit (which doesn't generally matter at all in this type of game anyway)
@Felthry it's extremely funny to me that in super mario bros 3, the angry sun was really scary, but in super mario maker 2 it's basically a joke
it lives in screen space rather than level space and because smm2 is widescreen, the sun is so much smaller in comparison to the play area
