aaaaaaaa why do people put music on their videos with such... *painful* percussion

someone told us that the percussion sounds we can't stand are generally called 'synthwave percussion' and can someone please tell us why this is so popular when it's almost literally painful to listen to
-F

@a_breakin_glass yeah i dunno, i was complaining about it and someone asked to see the video in question and they said "that's pretty standard synthwave percussion"

sincerely answering a question that you may have just been asking out of frustration and know the answer to

@Felthry i think that's probably a sensory thing you have and most people don't feel that way about it

re: sincerely answering a question that you may have just been asking out of frustration and know the answer to

@monorail how do people handle it though it's extremely unpleasant

@Felthry @monorail Neurotypical Brain™.

*shakes head incredulously*

re: sincerely answering a question that you may have just been asking out of frustration and know the answer to

@IceWolf @Felthry hey i can appreciate some synthwave, don't do ME dirty like this

re: sincerely answering a question that you may have just been asking out of frustration and know the answer to

@monorail @IceWolf just, the way it fucks with the dynamics of the entire piece is extremely Bad

dynamics is not a thing you change rapidly unless you want to make your thing unpleasant to listen to

re: sincerely answering a question that you may have just been asking out of frustration and know the answer to

@monorail @IceWolf just like

people put this stuff into things that are meant to be relaxing and we have literally heard metal music that's more relaxing than this

re: sincerely answering a question that you may have just been asking out of frustration and know the answer to

@Felthry @monorail @IceWolf is this about linking compression to percussion

re: sincerely answering a question that you may have just been asking out of frustration and know the answer to

@a_breakin_glass @monorail @IceWolf what does that mean
-F

re: sincerely answering a question that you may have just been asking out of frustration and know the answer to

@a_breakin_glass @monorail @IceWolf no this is not it at all, compressors for volume stabilization and preventing excessively loud things are fine

this is like, every drumbeat the entire audio just kinda *cuts out* for a moment

re: sincerely answering a question that you may have just been asking out of frustration and know the answer to

@Patashu @a_breakin_glass @monorail @IceWolf whatever it's called it's Really Bad and i don't like it and people should stop putting this in things that should have relaxing music

i said elsewhere in the thread that we have literally heard metal that's more relaxing than this

re: sincerely answering a question that you may have just been asking out of frustration and know the answer to

@Felthry @monorail @IceWolf whether somethings' pleasant or not is very subjective

@Felthry For neuro-divergent people of certain types like you and I, it's painful, but to most people it's... 'Cool' sounding, I guess? 'Cause it's so different from what you hear normally? But it does suck.

For me it's literally painful, no almost about it, 'cause it triggers migraines within in seconds.

@Felthry is it, like, youtube.com/watch?v=Bxz6jShW-3 kind of thing? content warnings for music with lyrics and also potentially exactly the kind of percussion y'all find painful

I remember in that video they talk about a drum sound that "just cuts right through the track" - it's loud and distorted and clippy and then it's gone

I think the speculation elsewhere in the thread is accurate - some people like it because they find it more exciting than painful

- 🔥

@packbat don't have the spoons to check that right now but there are links elsewhere in the thread to examples--i think i linked holly to a few
-F

@Felthry I don't see a link in there but our link was about compression and someone in thread says that it's probably sidechaining that's the unpleasant effect for y'all

@Felthry the first one, we're definitely noticing a very intense sidechain effect - the sound ducks out really strongly and then comes back

the second, we ... can't tell? that's kind of interesting - maybe hearing the distinction is something we'll pick up when we mess with actual electronic music production some

- 🔥 🐲

@packbat i don't know, whatever it is is even worse than the first one on our ears
-F

@Felthry *nods*

both pieces sound to us like the intended effect was being a dramatic buildup as opposed to chill and relaxing

I don't think we'll speculate on why they impacted y'all the way they did - we'll try not to recommend music that has that kind of vibe to y'all, though
