ways to feel old: see a youtube video titled "what happened to the A: and B: drives in windows"

realizing that so many people have never used floppy disks to the point that they don't even know that A: and B: are reserved for floppy drives...

@JulieSqveakaroo we actually used floppy disks just a few weeks ago

though that was because we were working with equipment that was built in the 80s and could only save data to floppy disks since it predates usb by a few years and predates usb mass storage by over a decade

@JulieSqveakaroo it was actually a little surprising to find that windows 10 will still accept usb floppy drives with no trouble whatsoever, it even has specific floppy drive icons

@Felthry

That does make sense for legacy purposes, but I would have doubts that modern computer stacks would be able to accept the original cables and pin slots that we needed to use, back then... definitely laptops wouldn't...

@JulieSqveakaroo I bet with the proper drivers and a controller card it would work but yeah not with stuff out of the box

@JulieSqveakaroo More likely you'd need a PCIe to PCI bridge though and plug in a PCI floppy controller

I'm quite sure you don't have to go all the way back to ISA

@Felthry

I have a few 3.5 floppies around, and I think I've still got a zipdisk or two... but not the hardware needed to read either of them, because there's just no actual need.

@Felthry hah, i use them for spare hard drives. windows future compatibility is weird

@pearshapes hah, wafers A, B, and C (along with D through P) are the names of something we've been working with at work

in our case they're categories of devices organized by which silicon wafer (all processed slightly differently) they came from, to evaluate which type of process works best for this thing

@Felthry
huh... im not sure if i ever knew this or not - i lived with a very computer-interested bro who would tell me stuff like this often for many years - or if i just AcceptedTM that the drives started at C:

i have used floppy, on our old windows 95 machine, specifically for a game my mum i think brought home from work (? she worked at a blood bank so idk). i woulda been about 5 or 6 at the time tho
