why are english muffins called that anyway
as we understand it they're nothing like what you'd get if you asked for a muffin in england

@Kilroy yeah a crumpet is probably the closest actual british food thing to it but it's not really that either

@Kilroy i'm guessing divergent evolution of a recipe that was brought here centuries ago? or maybe just someone sticking a foreign-sounding name on something not remotely foreign like how they do sometimes

@Felthry I honestly have no idea. It's not even a proper crumpet (which is apparently what it was originally called), being quite a bit flatter and drier than traditional crumpets.
