oh holy fuck how did we not realize this before now
we were just reminded of the existence of the wonderswan
and then suddenly out of nowhere the naming of that game boy knockoff called the mega duck made sense
-F
@Felthry ahahahaha, you got me
i do in fact love weird bootleg or also-ran consoles like the watara supervision and the dendy stuff out of russia
@gardevoir What does "also-ran" mean?
-F
@Felthry oh! hm. it's a term that's like "something which competed, technically, but did not succeed beyond maybe completing the race"
i.e., in the competition between the PS1 and the N64, the Atari Jaguar is definitely an also-ran
@gardevoir oh! so like video 2000 or hd vmd
-F
@Felthry oh my god, these are so obscure even *i've* never heard of them and I've fallen down a dozen youtube holes about obscure media formats, this rules
but yes, 100% accurate
@gardevoir i didn't think video 2000 at least was that obscure!! hd vmd though, definitely obscure as fuck
-F
@gardevoir obscure media formats are pretty cool though, i encourage falling down youtube and/or wikipedia holes
here are a few others for you: tefifon, CED, DVD-RAM, apple pippin
-F
@Felthry okay, I've heard at least in passing of most of those, but now I get to look up what the fuck "tefifon" is
thank you! kehehehe
@gardevoir that was the most obscure one i could think of off hand, so i'm glad to have introduced you to at least one new thing!
-F
@gardevoir it's a pretty neat sort of thing--imagine an endless loop tape like an 8-track, but with grooves like a vinyl record in it instead of magnetic media
-F
@Felthry omg you just made it make sense for me too lol
@astra i just commented on how unsurprised i was that mia boosted that, and I am similarly unsurprised that you had heard of the mega duck, hah
weird bootleg things are interesting
-F
@Felthry i love them, honestly~
i am extremely unsurprised that @gardevoir boosted this, hah
if *anyone* else on here had ever heard of the mega duck it'd be them
-F
