is it the case that everyone knows the way to get through the lost woods forest of maze in zelda 1 or is that just us

it feels like one of those things everyone knows by heart
-F

since it seems it is not, in fact, one of those things that everyone knows, just for anyone curious the answer is ↑,←,↓,←

we always remember it as just going left and alternating up and down between lefts, since there's no penalty for a wrong direction other than having to start over that always gets it done within 7 screen transitions, and we forget where it starts a lot
-F

@socks i don't know, we have a bad habit of assuming things we know and have known for a very long time are just things that everyone knows, so i'm asking to check that
-F

@socks like there are plenty of things in video games that even people who haven't played the game know, i'm wondering if this is one of them
-F

@Felthry Nope, not at all

The only example I can think of of something like that is the Konami code, which I don't know but plenty of people do

@socks the other examples i was thinking of were the fact that you can get meat out of the walls in castlevania, and the plot twists of final fantasies 6 and 7
-F

@Felthry Castlevania is one that I know but I think it's still a little niche. I wouldn't expect people to know it

7 is only well known because spoiling it became a very common joke back in the day. 6 I don't think many people know

final fantasy 6 spoilers

@socks i mean the twist in the plot is literally just that kefka is the big bad guy, not gestahl, and i guarantee you that more people who haven't played ffvi (probably more people who *have*) would recognise the name kefka as being from ffvi than gestahl

final fantasy 6 spoilers

@Felthry I was thinking about the fact that the world gets destroyed

In that case yes, that's most likely because anything FF6-related that mentions the bad guy (say, Dissidia) has Kefka in it, and also Dancing Mad is extremely popular

In your example, there is no adjacent media talking about the path through the woods in Zelda, I think

@Felthry I couldn't tell you how to do it right this second, but I imagine if I fired up the game and got to that point it would come back to me! It's definitely a game I've played multiple times as a child, so it is essentially muscle memory at this point

@Felthry I don't! Don't really like Zelda 1 and things like that are part of the reason, haha

@sharkNserg i mean, that in particular *is* one of the things that the game tells you outright in a non-cryptic manner at least
-F

@sharkNserg definitely understand though, we like the game despite its crypticness not because of it
-F

@Felthry we never played zelda 1, actually!

I mean we played it a little bit, like, last year on our Switch, but never enough to actually learn our way around

- 🎒

@terrana It's in the southwest of Hyrule. Not the northwest or east because hyrule has no concept of consistency. (and that's probably a good thing)
-F

@Felthry Hyrule's really more of an idea than an actual place.
