would it be a good idea to do this project in GB Studio? absolutely not

…could I do it anyway, and contort this tool into just barely being able to squeeze out the game I have in mind?

…I think so

nrrrrrgh, I think I have a solution but it’s awful

wide sprites strain the scan line limit so like you’d have to… make a transition to a fixed pattern which is an actual background object, already containing the drawn image you want

and then if you want two characters to appear on screen at once, another toolchain to generate every pair of character images you want, and render them all out as backgrounds, so that GB Studio turns them into tilemaps you can switch between

@gardevoir is it possible on the game boy to edit sprite pointers or other sprite data mid-scanline?

@gardevoir basically can you do the atari 2600 nonsense on gameboy

@Felthry oooooh

I’ve heard that weird stuff happens if you try to do too much mid-scanline, so… possibly, but you’d have to be especially clever…

Follow

@gardevoir (if you're unaware, the reason i call it the atari nonsense is because you had to do that on the 2600 at least some contemporary atari 8-bit computers; you only got two sprites, they can't be turned off, they're 8×1 and only have an x position, and they're drawn every scanline. there were also two "bullets" that worked the same way but iwrc are 1×1)
