how come the dreamcast controllers have what appears to be an actual dpad? that was during the time period nintendo had a patent on dpads--both the playstation (before the dreamcast) and the xbox (after it) had to make compromises on their dpads to avoid the patent

@noiob I dunno, was nintendo willing to license out the technology? We hadn't heard of anyone else paying for a license, and though sega was on their last legs by then they were historically nintendo's main competitor

@Felthry I mean with the gamecube they ended up being their greatest ally
@noiob How do you mean? Just all the dreamcast games that got rereleased on gamecube?

I guess they had mostly reconciled by then (though i'm not sure sega would have survived as a company if they hadn't)

@Felthry maybe they just paid for the license? afaik the xbox d-pad is like that because they wanted to make it easier to play games like fighters where you'd need to roll and hit diagonals
