...i imagine anyone who's never lived there visiting the US south at the wrong time will be *very* surprised by the monthly tornado siren test
even more so when no one around them reacts to it

@noiob of the two regions we've lived in, the south is the only one that has them
I guess the great plains might have them too, since they get tornadoes too
tornadoes don't really *happen* in most of the country though, so they don't have siren warning systems for them

@noiob well, presumably there's some other natural disaster that the sirens are there to warn about?
here in the northwest the only real thing that happens is wildfires and there's no point having sirens for those because if you're too close your own fire alarms will go off, and if you're far away from them you'll still know because of all the smoke

@noiob We had weekly tornado sirens in Wisconsin, when I was a kid... they are less freqvent now, but they still do occasionally happen.
