slurs

Ughhh. I mention that I'm uncomfortable with the term 'sh*male' in a chat room and people get upset at me. Why are people so insistent on using slurs?

slurs

@Felthry Interestingly, I know someone (likely unrelated) who very much identifies with the term and is annoyed when folks get on their case about it, so... *shrug* Language is hard.

slurs

@ElectricKeet I have nothing against people who want to use the word for themselves. I have everything against people who use the word to describe others without their consent.

@ElectricKeet I just thought that, since it was a room _specifically_ about gender non-conforming people, that people would be at least a little bit understanding x.x

slurs

@Felthry Oh, geez, no. As a long-time genderfucked tranny – remember when these terms was in use? – I can safely say that gender-related channels are the most likely to flip their shit when you use a term you like to use for yourself but they've been told can only possibly be a berating slur. What's great is when they disagree amongst themselves; it's like fireworks! Inside a small room!

slurs

@ElectricKeet Except that wasn't even what happened. Someone was trying to apply the word sh*male to people who have explicitly declared themselves to be male-with-boobs, and I took offense to that. It's... just not a word that I'm comfortable around.

slurs

Actually, this has inspired me to make a more public post about the subject in general. *gets to typing*

slurs

@ElectricKeet also I don't remember when those terms were in use, and I've only ever seen the latter and only in the context of it being a slur. I'm uncomfortable with it, but if you want to describe yourself that way, you're certainly allowed to.
