re: Musing on Power Grids using Renewable Energy

@mawr the night demand is likely where nuclear power would come in, in an ideal world, until we get adequate energy storage capacity figured out
-F

@sharkNserg i dunno, sounds like it could be cozy to me! preference, i'm sure
-F

@sharkNserg yeah it's not something i think is *wrong*, it's just dialectal thing
-F

it does make sense though; they both do the same thing: dump energy into water to raise its temperature

it's just that the actual industrial boilers take it a step further to actually boil the water, whereas water heaters... don't

so boiler is a bit of a misnomer since no boiling is involved (or if it is, something's gone very wrong)

the fact that some people call water heaters "boilers" is really weird to us

we mostly associate the word "boiler" with the industrial equipment for producing high-pressure steam, known for being *incredibly* dangerous if anything goes wrong, i.e. exactly the sort of thing you absolutely do not want to be in domestic buildings

it occurred to us in the car just now that there is probably a place somewhere where you could be giving someone directions and say "head west on northeast south street, then turn left onto wright street"

re: context re: genre thoughts, 2014 novel "Annihilation"

@packbat i'm pretty sure one of the discworld books that talks about dwarven society goes into how they have towers like this too, which might be part of why it doesn't seem odd to us--we've seen it before
-F

re: context re: genre thoughts, 2014 novel "Annihilation"

@packbat doesn't seem that weird to me honestly? it's still (presumably) a structure that's much larger vertically than horizontally, i could see calling it a tower

Consider a fox

they are glad you're thinking about them and would like pets

re: hobbyist electronics

@starkatt It's always nice when you need a thing and it turns out someone already makes an IC for exactly the thing!
-F

@nautilee @kat yeah same here honestly

we've been in that situation a few times and it's kinda stressful
-F

@packbat That's not uncommon in classical music stuff--put a big-name composer in just to attract people and then mostly play the stuff by other composers that you want to play. Mussorgsky doesn't feel quite as well known as the composers this is usually done with (like bach, beethoven, mozart, schumann, brahms, etc) but he's definitely more well-known than borodin (whose music we are wholly unfamiliar with, should check it out sometime)
-F

@starseeker yeah but why was the phoenecian one in that order
-F

why is the alphabet in the order it is anyway
-F

re: kinda musing over personal negativity in my posts

@FreyaManibrandr @heatherhorns that kind of thing is apparently just what british schools do, according to a british friend of ours

it feels kinda weird

re: food

@xenon oh it's a fruit gazpacho
-F

why is there no fruit soup

sticking stickers on the vegetable section at the grocery store that say "instant vegetable soup, just add water"
