this isn't particularly remarkable but it's still a little funny

sometimes we think about the fact that the original game boy was technically an x86 system just like most modern computers
-F

@packbat random interesting aside: on the NES, at least, each game tended to use its own tuning
-F

@packbat in that case then yeah, going level 1 or 2 on the detail and then adding an appendix that gets into 3 and 4 is a good idea, since you'll invariably have people wondering why *these* pitches
-F

@packbat basically i don't think we can answer this without knowing what you want th eanswer for
-F

@packbat I think that depends on what context you're going into it in

if you're making an intro-to-music thing, start with option 1

if you're going for a music 201 class, go for option 3 or 4

i mean obviously it's "that cuisine uses those spices a lot" but what drove that particular spice to be popular in that area
-F

Show thread

what is it, i wonder, that makes certain spices heavily associated with certain cuisines? like if you say cumin we think of tex-mex (despite the fact that cumin is rarely if ever used in actual mexican food), oregano is very italian, ginger is chinese or chinese-american (unless it just reminds of you gingerbread, which is fair)

just squeeze them real hard until they give up on being separate things

it's kind of weird how crimping works. Take this piece of metal and that piece of metal and push them together real hard until they become one piece of metal

somehow this produces more reliable bonds than soldering

we learned recently that the toyota prius for some reason has two identical electric machines in its drivetrain, one used exclusively as a motor and the other exclusively as a generator. i don't know why they didn't go with one larger machine used for both purposes; perhaps just making it simpler to drive (the motor and generator, not the car)
-F

@Dex @terrana I'm glad it did, though. It's quite hard to play Saturn games these days, and if it had been Saturn-exclusive I don't know how we would play it now.

Then again, if a game like SotN had been Saturn-exclusive, maybe Sega would still be making video game consoles.
-F

@Facet that's true! I guess I was thinking more of control gimmicks, since I was thinking specifically about how awful that whole magic seal thing was in dawn of sorrow
