What about all the bits that were undeniably part of the roman empire but not in europe? Having Egypt and Tunisia in the *European* Union would probably be a little strange.

i find it kind of funny how much of europe fought wars over access to intense spices and flavorings and then the instant those spices and flavorings became affordable to the lower classes, all the high society people (especially in france) decided that nope, unspiced food was the *real* good stuff, the blander the better, don't want to be like those *peasants* with their *tasty* food, do you?
