one of our favorite electrical engineer things is the MELF package, which probably actually stands for something but everyone we know just says it stands for "Most End up Lying on the Floor" because of how easily they roll off of tables

The thing about multimeters is that, by design, you're sticking them into unknown electrical conditions. If it turns out what you thought was a +12V rail was actually +12kV, your meter is not going to survive regardless of how much you paid for it. Whether you paid $5 or $50 will determine whether your hand survives.
