oof we need to clean stuff but that's hard

apartment is a mess right now and that just makes it harder

and yes, this includes error messages if they are possible to see within the other bounds of the category (glitchless text% would probably not need any error messages, but glitched would include things like "THIS MESSAGE SHOULD NOT APPEAR")

bad idea for a speedrun category:

text%, where you have to get the game to display every possible textbox it can before completing it

I know some currency symbols go after the number (and some can go in either place, like € can) but is there any alignment between that and the positioning when spoken in the local language?

Show thread

it's kind of odd how some currency symbols come before the amount like "$5" but when spoken the currency name comes after, like "five dollars"

there's a certain innocence to 'w' style kaomoji

it's like the exact opposite feeling as owo style ones

why is it that in video games you always hear about the japanese, european, and north american releases and sometimes also the australian version but never anywhere else? south america, africa, and non-japan asia certainly get video games, i'm sure

*breaks the fourth wall, the fifth wall, and the ceiling*

oops

like whenever we're on the EE stackexchange there are frequently people using the word "doubt" in ways I don't see very much, titling questions thing like "doubt regarding X" or introducing a sentence with "I have a doubt about..." and I'm curious if that's how questions are phrased in some particular language or if it's the influence of a particularly popular english-as-a-second-language textbook or what

Show thread

I'm really interested in learning what thought processes lead to people making certain unconventional phrasing choices in english when they're not very familiar with the language but I don't know of any polite way to ask people about that, especially given that the people who make those kinds of phrasing/word choices are not usually the best at communicating in english

why do video games sometimes get north american releases but not european ones, or european releases and not NA ones

I get that a european release may mean more languages to translate it to, I guess, but an NA release only needs english (french and spanish are bonus points though) which an EU release also needs anyway

question: is there some page or document out there somewhere that has a list of all the items and pokemon in vietnamese crystal, with their official english translations?

and now people got me thinking about connector design and now I'm thinking it'd be nice to be able to lock together connectors of different sizes; you can put the powerpole connectors together into a block of connectors but they have to all be the same size connector, which you might not want

not sure how you'd engineer that though

misinformation, joke, based on something we saw yesterday

the reason the nintendo switch doesn't have a d-pad is because vampires designed it and they can't use cross-shaped things

next to go will be the X button, to be relabelled Z

Anderson powerpole connectors are just so satisfying

also genderless, like me!

Today I learned: Mario the bouncy mushroom plumber and Paarthurnax the distinguished Skyrim elder dragon are voiced by the same actor.

random thought: EA is famous for making overproduced games that are bland at best and awful at worst. were they ever good, or have they always been like that?

why are so many fantasy languages written with an alphabet? more fantasy languages should have abjads or abugidas or syllabaries or logographies or something completely different.

"Gluten? No, I make _my_ foods with glue _eleven_."

the japanese blue version was split into two games for the west, which were called red and blue. western red contains the updates from japanese blue, which was the generation's third version
