game design, 4x games and colonialism

had a thought about 4x games, civ in particular

you always have the generic "barbarians" faction who are in game design terms meant to just give you some fodder to train your early military against before you meet other civilizations

what if you had a game where, instead of that, or perhaps in addition to that, all other players' civilizations and all city-states appear as barbarians until you research the appropriate technology to communicate with them

*in particular*, ones who start close to you (perhaps on the same continent?) would be easier to initiate contact with, while ones who are far away you won't be able to have your civilization view as equals until well past the age of exploration, on the grounds that their culture and language is much too different for your age-of-exploration colonialist empire to recognise as civilized

it'd also help if starting times and/or technology costs were staggered or different for each player, so that there can be a significant imbalance even for players who know how to play the game

this would definitely give the player a bit more of an understanding of how Bad colonialism is in general by giving a more realistic simulation of how it happens, i think

...hmm. how terrible an idea would it be to add pepper juice to a vegetable juice mixture

is capsicum the best fruit?

probably not, but it's a pretty great one

it feels really weird and strange when someone with a photo of a human face as an avatar replies to me

actually I guess they probably did have wasabi, hmm

it's really weird to think that before european contact with the americas, the hottest spice europe, asia, and africa had access to was black pepper

food

we can't go out to eat right now because of isolation stuff and i want mongolian chicken and have no way to make it at home ;w;

hey @fluxom_art@octodon.social will you still be doing those icon commissions next month? we can't afford one this month and I *really* want one

idea: a 4x game, except you play as the barbarians, who are in fact already quite an established culture who everyone else refuses to acknowledge

so uh

does "honeycomb" mean something different in the UK?

because we just saw something with a british person talking about "making honeycomb" in the same sort of way you'd talk about making a cake or something, like it's something you do and not something you wait for bees to do for you

the word quincunx looks like it should mean something lewd but actually it just means a ⁙

Boktai has been completed! That was not as hard as we remembered it being.

I think I'll be streaming Ys next, take a bit of a break from Boktai. I will do the full Boktai series eventually though! We have Boktai 2, and a fan translation of Boktai 3, ready to play whenever.

Probably? won't be doing Lunar Knights though.

But anyway, get ready for the next stream to be something entirely different!

Last time, we took down Carmilla in Sol City, the terribly-designed city in the sky--and lost our favorite floatbuddy in the process. Now it's time to move forward and find out just what Sabata is up to, and what he wants from us. And, perhaps, who he is as well?

Continuing Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand at 10:30 CDT (UTC-5)! That's fifty minutes from the time of this posting.

that's not to say the hardware had nothing going for it at all though. it's maybe 30% hardware and 70% great composers

A lot of people really like C64 music, and for good reason

but I feel like that reason is less because of the hardware and more because there were just a lot of *really good composers* writing music for C64 games
