the Laplace transform is very useful, actually
they're not really *pure* metroidvanias since they kinda walk you through getting stuff, but you *do* gain more access to places as you gain more abilities, and the hub area at least you keep getting access to new secrets
it just occurred to me that the first couple harry potter pc games are kind of metroidvanias

Last time, we rescued a doctor from a cave-in and found ghost-statues of five of the six Priests of Ys. Unfortunately, the cave-in that trapped Doctor Flair seems to have blocked off access to the last priest statue! Time to figure out what to do now.
