as noted in the aside there though, Sony's collaborative formats seem to do well for themselves pretty reliably. The CD-DA (aka audio CD), CD-ROM, and CD-R were unmitigated successes, the DVD and DVD-ROM were similarly massive successes

Historically, Sony's major solo formats seem to have alternated successful and failure--Umatic was a success, at least in the market it was intended for, then beta was a failure, then 3.5" floppy disks were a huge success, then memory stick flopped horribly, then blu-ray managed to somehow beat out hd-dvd

(Sony was involved with the creation of the CD and DVD formats but i'm not counting them because sony didn't do them alone, Philips and Panasonic did a lot of the engineering and marketing)

why was sony so insistent on referring to the memory cards as specifically "Memory Card (8 MB) (For Playstation™ 2)"

We went out to the middle of nowhere to try to see the comet. We either succeeded in seeing it, very faintly, or we had a smudge on our binoculars' lenses.

I'm not sure which, honestly. The viewing conditions around here are not great; lots of forest in the way and a fair bit of light pollution.

We see a lot of UFOs, but it's not that there are lots of aliens visiting, we're just really bad at identifying birds

Thoughts on dealing with crises

And the thing you tell everyone is that it's okay for them all to have their own emotional reactions to how this will affect them—that's normal and healthy, and it's not "selfish"

But

When you need emotional support, generally speaking, you should lean on the people who are in a circle that's further from the centre of the crisis, not one that's closer

And I feel like this sort of philosophy can be applied to other kinds of crises as well

Thoughts on dealing with crises

One of the things they taught me in school was how to counsel people to provide emotional support to each other during medical crises

Imagine a series of concentric circles; the people who are most affected by the crisis are at the centre—say it's a person who just found out they have cancer

Their partner might be next "closest," their immediate family or very close friends next, but of course who is "next" in being close to this person will vary

Here's one of my absolute favorite shots, "Momentary", where one had been sailing over the other, before being kicked out of the way mid-air, leaving them with a perfectly hapless expression.

FFX, though, that game's dark and doesn't really hide it. FFIX has a veneer of colorful cartoonishness but FFX is just dark. Not edgy (except lulu), just dark.
