we tend to think of oxides as insulative, which makes tin dioxide *really weird*

but in cases like, say, astronomy, you might think of copernicus or galileo as founders, and both of them were wrong about a bunch of stuff but they were also right about a bunch of stuff

and newtonian mechanics (n.b.: newton's laws were probably stolen from hooke, but newton gets credit anyway because history) is still perfectly valid when not dealing with exceptional situations

maybe medicine in the broader sense, looking at Galen as the "founder" and very little of his work has any actual scientific merit as we understand

I wonder if there's any field other than psychology that has a prominent historical figure seen as the field's founder, but also whose every word on the topic is generally regarded by those in the field as pretty much just plain wrong

The person at the store was very confident that they could help us find whatever we needed, even after Felthry said we're looking for something a bit unusual.

When it said that unusual thing was a USB-to-IDE adapter, they seemed surprised at the idea that someone might need something they don't stock.

I guess they probably usually just need to help someone find a laptop or something, though.

neat math/physics puzzle: For a rigid pendulum of mass m and length L, starting at rest with an angle θ from vertical, find the tension in the massless rod that supports the pendulum as a function of time

i think this is a particularly interesting one to puzzle through because it's not the thing you're normally asked to do with this and i wonder if it's possible to solve this without ever solving for the pendulum's motion

The student bowed.
"Master, I am sorry."
"Why were you absent yesterday?" the sword master asked.
"I don't know. I... simply could not get out of bed."
"If this happens again..."
"Yes?"
"Allow yourself to stay in bed."
"Master?"
"A blunt sword can be honed. A broken one can not."
